She lived in uptown; afraid of taking the train
I’d always hoped that she would crawl down and follow me ‘round ‘till she stayed.
I must’ve lucked out ‘cuz I know it wasn’t fame
but there she stood under my dark cloud muttering out some mistakes.
I had offered a rose in hopes that one day she’d sing…La da da da, da da
You know she moved out of that old place where she’d been
and I just loved that she was so proud to be living in my den of sin
I showed her new tricks and she was eager to play
She learned quick how to get her own kicks; putting my spoon to the flame.
I could never explain how I felt when she did sing…la da da da, da da
Oh, but I should’ve known the trouble that it would bring.
She found her last fix hiding under the sink
and just to say it makes me so sick so I don’t but I think about it.
‘Cuz now she don’t sing and I know I am to blame
She wasn’t just another numb thing who couldn’t relate to the sane.
She was hopeful and glowing when our eyes met that day
Wish it didn’t have to end this way ‘cuz I long for that sweet serenade…la da da da, da da
